CORE

CORE is an aggregator of [open access][^open-access] scientific papers. As of 2023, CORE exposes an ecosystem of eight services based on the collective dataset of over 36,000 full texts and over 270,000 metadata entries, from 11,000 data providers.

Below, I would like to outline three pillars where I proactively took a leading role to build a solid project foundation.

[^open-access]: Open access (OA) is a set of principles and a range of practices through which research outputs are distributed online, free of access charges or other barriers.

Contribution

  • Built a unified design language for 5 services by conceiving and documenting visual identity from the exiting materials and leveraging Material Design & Spotify's best practices, ensuring brand consistency across the product portfolio.

  • Designed a front-end infrastructure reflecting the team development processes, consisting of a component library, six repositories dedicated to individual services, and a style guide to keep this multi-repository codebase uniform.

  • Streamlined code reviewing eliminating at least one step across 941 pull request (as on June 2021) by establishing coding guidelines backed up with automated checks, shifting communication focus from code style onto delivering functionality and avoiding bugs.

  • Encouraged teammate's initiative in creating a central repository for coding conventions incorporating 4 config packages and scaling static code analysis across 5 repositories for keeping the multi-repository codebase uniform.

  • Designed and developed a banner adding credit to PDF documents and raising awareness of the Open Access and the project — increased daily website views by 5 % (+1.5M monthly on average).
